Elder Abuse
There is no victim "type" for elder abuse. Elder abuse can affect people of all races, ethnic backgrounds, social status, and either sex.
Types of Abuse
The National Center on Elder Abuse of the Administration on Aging defines six types of elder abuse:
It is difficult to determine the rate elder abuse occurs. Many victims do
not report or are unable to report the abuse or neglect inflicted upon them.

50% of nursing home staff admitted to mistreating older patients in their care
In interview of 2,000 nursing home residents
44% reported that they have been abused
95% reported they had been neglected or witnessed neglect
Types of Abuse
The National Center on Elder Abuse of the Administration on Aging defines six types of elder abuse:
- Physical Abuse—The inflicting of, or threatening to inflict, physical pain or injury on a vulnerable elder, or depriving them of a basic need.
- Emotional Abuse—Inflicting mental pain, anguish, or distress on an elder person through verbal or nonverbal acts.
- Sexual Abuse—Non-consensual sexual contact of any kind, coercing an elder to witness sexual behaviors.
- Exploitation—Illegal taking, misuse, or concealment of funds, property, or assets of a vulnerable elder.
- Neglect—Refusal or failure by those responsible to provide food, shelter, health care or protection for a vulnerable elder.
- Abandonment—The desertion of a vulnerable elder by anyone who has assumed the responsibility for care or custody of that person.

Recognizes victims are not likely to report and that loved one is most likely to perpetrator
Program works with both perpetrator and victim to repair the harm and restore their relationship
Disapproves of offenders actions but allows offender to make amends and shed the label of OFFENDER
